Central Spain

Some of the most intriguing and culturally rich areas of Spain are those which make up its central regions. Names such as Castilla y Leon, Castilla La Mancha and Extremadura conjure images of Roman soldiers, conquistadores, Moorish castles and stunning natural parks. Your Spain trip is waiting! Contact the tourist office of Spain for information about Spain hotels, Spain flights, Spain travel deals and much more.

At the heart of Spain is Castilla La Mancha, a region which instantly calls to mind Cervante's literary masterpiece "Man of La Mancha." The windmills Don Quixote chased still dot the landscape which also lays claim to the Route of Castles. The capital of Toledo is an architectural gem and has been deemed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Medieval and Moorish wonders are visible throughout the province of Guadalajara, while the remarkable "Hanging Houses" on the cliffs of Cuena have garnered the town a UNESCO Patrimony of Humanity.

There are areas of the landscape in Castilla y Leon which remain almost virginal in nature. With its natural preserves and pristine oak and cork forests, it's hard to believe there is so much history in this province. You will find captivating towns such as Avila, Salamanca and Leon which still bear witness to their Roman past. A massive Roman aqueduct dominates the town of Segovia. Built in the 1st Century, it is a true engineering marvel.

Extremadura is also known for its parks and wide array of wildlife, but the shear scope and detail of the roman ruins in the city of Merida will leave you in awe. The stunning theater and well preserved amphitheater give you a true sense of life there centuries ago. Those fascinated by the Moorish influence on the region will be enchanted by the spectacular watch towers along the town walls of Caceres. This World Heritage site, an amazing 30 towers from the Muslim period still stand.
